Vaux, a village on the edge of the Verdun battlefield in northeastern France, was a ruin by 1918. Its houses and church were flattened by artillery during the Battle of Verdun in 1916, when the nearby Fort de Vaux was taken by German troops in June and retaken by the French that November. Before the war, the surrounding valleys relied on farming, quarrying, and small trade along local roads and rail lines, but the fighting left few families to return. In 1918 the ground still bore trench lines and shell craters, and Allied units moving through the sector that autumn crossed land where little of the old town remained. The Armistice came on November 11, 1918, and rebuilding the devastated villages of the Meuse would occupy the following decade.
