Clermont, which the title spells as Clearmont, was a small market town in the Argonne hills of northeastern France in 1918, with farms and stone houses that had long depended on the surrounding woods and fields. By autumn it lay within the Meuse-Argonne sector, where American forces opened their major offensive on September 26, 1918. Shelling and the constant movement of men and materiel had left the town battered, and its roads carried ammunition, supplies, and troops toward the fighting in the forest to the north. Residents who had lived through more than four years of war knew the district less for its trade than for its place on the front, and the offensive ended with the armistice on November 11.
