Malancourt, a village on the heights east of the Meuse River near Verdun, lay in the Argonne sector in 1918, a district already scarred by the battle of Verdun in 1916. By autumn the surrounding ground had been fought over for two years, and most of the village's houses and roads had been reduced to rubble. American units of the First Army moved through this country when the Meuse-Argonne offensive opened on September 26, 1918, pushing against German positions dug into the wooded ridges. For the soldiers who advanced through it and the French residents who had fled or returned to the area, the name came to stand for a slow, costly struggle through shelled terrain that lasted until the armistice on November 11.
