Four de Paris, a named position in the Argonne Forest of northeastern France, lay in the path of the American First Army's Meuse-Argonne offensive in 1918. The attack began on September 26, and American divisions pushed through steep ravines, dense woods, and tangled barbed wire, while artillery churned the ground around the position into bare earth. Most of the men who fought there were draftees and volunteers from towns and farms across the United States, many of them seeing combat for the first time. The offensive ended with the armistice on November 11, and the Argonne had by then become one of the costliest battlefields in American military history. For families back home, a name like Four de Paris came to mean a place where a son or brother might have been lost.
