The Argonne Forest in northeastern France was the scene of one of the largest and bloodiest American actions of 1918. Beginning on September 26, the Meuse-Argonne offensive sent the American First Army, under General John J. Pershing, against German lines in a tangle of ravines, dense woods, and hidden machine-gun nests. Advances came slowly and at heavy cost, and tens of thousands of American soldiers were killed or wounded before the offensive ended with the Armistice on November 11. For Americans at home, the Argonne became shorthand for the final push that broke German resistance, and its name appeared in newspapers across the country that autumn.
