In 1919 the Hindenburg Line and the Argonne Forest still bore the scars of the fighting of 1918, when the German defensive system was broken. The Meuse-Argonne offensive, which the American First Army began in late September 1918, pushed through dense forest and trench works at a cost of tens of thousands of American casualties before the armistice of 11 November. By the time this view was made, the ground was a landscape of shell craters, tangled wire, and abandoned equipment, and crews were still clearing it, burying the dead, and salvaging material. The Treaty of Versailles, signed in June 1919, set terms for Germany, but for local farmers and villagers the immediate task was rebuilding what four years of war had wrecked.
