Reims in 1919 was still recovering from four years of German shelling that began in September 1914, when bombardment and fires gutted much of the city center and damaged its great cathedral. The Palais du Tau, the archbishop's residence beside the cathedral, had long housed French kings during the days before their coronations there, a tradition that made the site a symbol of national memory. Before the war Reims was known chiefly as the center of the champagne trade, with cellars cut into the chalk beneath the city and wine houses shipping bottles abroad. In 1919 those cellars and the wine business were slowly returning, while residents faced damaged housing, scarce food, and the work of clearing rubble from the streets around the palace and cathedral.
