Etain, a town in the Meuse department of northeastern France roughly 15 miles northwest of Verdun, lay close to the front for much of the First World War. German forces occupied it in 1914, and it stayed under German control until the advances of late 1918 freed it. Its railway junction made it valuable to the army that held it, and the shelling and fighting in the Verdun sector left most of its buildings in ruins. By 1919, residents who had fled or been displaced were returning to flattened streets, and rebuilding the devastated northeast became a long task for the French state and local councils. This panorama records a town whose ruins were still largely in place the year the Treaty of Versailles was signed.
