Richecourt is a small farming village in the Meuse department of northeastern France, near Saint-Mihiel and the Meuse River. German forces held the Saint-Mihiel salient from 1914, and fighting there left the village wrecked by shelling. American troops attacked the salient in September 1918 and pushed the Germans out, and in 1919 the Paris Peace Conference was meeting while the region's towns still lay in ruins. Returning residents faced fields pocked with shell craters, damaged roads, and houses reduced to rubble. Rebuilding the devastated northeast was a national priority for France, and for many families in villages like this one, the photograph captured the scale of loss they would have to face.
