Montsec, a village in the Meuse department of northeastern France, sat at the foot of a hill that commanded the plain around it, and by 1918 four years of front-line fighting had reduced it to ruins. In September 1918, American units of the First Army under General John J. Pershing attacked the Saint-Mihiel salient, and the height of Montsec, held by German troops who used it for observation, was among the objectives they took. Before the war the surrounding countryside had been farmland and small villages, with agriculture as the main livelihood. This photograph shows the town as it looked in the months after that fighting, when the people who had once lived there were still scattered and the Armistice of November 1918 had not yet ended the wider war.
