Belleau, a farming village in the Aisne department of northern France near Château-Thierry, was by 1918 a place of ruin rather than ordinary life. Its people had lived by grain and livestock, but the German spring offensive pushed the front into the Marne valley, and in June the nearby wood and village became the scene of fighting between the U.S. Marine Corps's 2nd Division and German troops. The Marines took Belleau Wood at a cost of heavy casualties, and the village was battered by shelling until little of it stood. For American families who followed the news that summer, Belleau came to stand for the first major offensive action of the United States in the war.
