In 1919, Reims was a city of ruins after four years of German bombardment along the Western Front. Shelling that began in September 1914 set fires, collapsed roofs, and left much of the old center unusable, and the cathedral, where French kings had long been crowned, was among the landmarks badly damaged. The champagne trade, which had made Reims known far beyond France, had been disrupted by the war, and its cellars and offices were now tied to the work of clearing rubble and reopening businesses. Residents who returned after the armistice of November 1918 faced shortages of housing, water, and rail service, while local officials pressed for rebuilding funds. For people living there, the square stood as evidence of how much of their town the war had taken.
