Reims in 1919 was a city recovering from four years on the Western Front. German artillery had repeatedly shelled it from 1914 onward, and the great Gothic cathedral, where French kings had been crowned for centuries, was badly damaged by fire and bombardment. Residents who looked out over the rooftops would have seen many roofs and facades still broken, as rebuilding had only just begun after the November 1918 armistice. The city's older economy, built on champagne cellars carved into the chalk beneath the streets and on its long-standing wool and textile trade, was struggling to restart. Reims had long been known as the coronation city of the French monarchy, and in 1919 it was becoming known as a symbol of French endurance.
