Reims, in the Champagne region of northeastern France, stood in 1918 as one of the most battered cities of the Western Front. German artillery had been shelling it since 1914, and the Gothic cathedral, where French kings had traditionally been crowned, was struck repeatedly, with its roof and timbers burning in the first months of the war. Before the fighting, the city had lived from its wool and textile mills and from the champagne houses whose cellars ran deep beneath its chalk hills, a trade known far beyond France. By 1918 most residents had fled or been moved away, and the streets that remained were broken by shell fire, with the front lines only a short distance to the north. American soldiers passing through on their way to the front saw in Reims a city that had come to stand for French endurance.
