Verdun, France, in 1918 was a battered fortress town on the Meuse River, shattered by the German assault that began in February 1916. That battle lasted until December and left hundreds of thousands of soldiers killed or wounded across the hills to the north and east. The town's civilians had been evacuated early in the fighting, so by the time American photographers made this view from the citadel, its streets and churches stood broken among heaps of stone. Later that year the American army's Meuse-Argonne offensive, launched in late September, advanced through the same hills and valleys, and the town's name had come to stand for endurance and loss on both sides of the Atlantic.
