Montfaucon, a hilltop village in the Argonne region of northeastern France, was reduced to rubble in 1918 after holding a commanding view over the Meuse valley. American infantry seized the position on September 26, 1918, the opening day of the Meuse-Argonne offensive, which became the largest American campaign of the war. German artillery and machine-gun crews had fortified the high ground for years, so the fighting there was costly, and the village itself was almost entirely destroyed. Before the war, the community had been a farming and quarry settlement whose stone houses and church had given way to shell craters and broken walls by the time this photograph was made. Residents who returned after the armistice of November 11, 1918, found little left to rebuild on the summit.
