Montfaucon, a village on a rise in the Meuse department of northeastern France, was in 1918 one of the most fought-over points on the Western Front. Its hilltop gave German forces a commanding view across the surrounding plain, so when the American Expeditionary Forces launched the Meuse-Argonne offensive on September 26, American troops pushed to take the high ground, and the village fell on September 27. The fighting left the village almost entirely in ruins, and the bare, shelled landscape visible in this panorama shows how completely the hill had been torn apart. The campaign continued until the armistice of November 11, 1918, and the Montfaucon position became a lasting symbol of the American effort in the region.
