Limey, a village in northeastern France, lay in the St. Mihiel sector in 1918, where German forces had held ground since 1914 and where the fighting left many farms and houses damaged or destroyed. American troops moved into the area in the late summer, and the St. Mihiel offensive in September 1918 cut back the German salient that had pressed into Allied territory for four years. The campaign was among the first major operations led by the American First Army, and for the American soldiers who passed through the district, the broken walls and cratered fields were a first close view of what the war had done to French villages. Residents who had fled or been displaced in earlier years would have known the place less as a town than as a line of ruins.
