Lucy-le-Bocage, a farming village in the Aisne department of northern France, lay near the Marne River in 1918, in country where wheat, sugar beets, and small holdings had long supported local families. That spring and summer the German offensives pushed the front back and forth across the Marne, and the surrounding villages were shelled, emptied of residents, and largely reduced to rubble. The Allied counteroffensive that began in July brought American troops of the American Expeditionary Forces into this sector, and the fighting turned the village's fields and roads into a battlefield. For the residents who returned after the armistice, Lucy-le-Bocage was known less for its harvests than for the destruction of its houses and the long work of rebuilding them.
