Montzeville, a village in the Meuse-Argonne sector of northeastern France, lay in ruins in 1918 after four years of fighting along the old front near Verdun. Before 1914 the surrounding Argonne countryside was farmland and woodland, where families raised wheat, potatoes and livestock on small holdings. The American First Army launched its Meuse-Argonne offensive on September 26, 1918, and the attack drove through this ground over the following weeks in what became the largest operation the United States Army fought in the war. Displaced residents would have known the village as a shattered landmark on that front, and rebuilding such places would take years after the armistice of November 11, 1918.
