Esnes, a village in northeastern France near the edge of the Argonne Forest, lay in the path of the Meuse-Argonne offensive that American forces launched in late September 1918. Hill 304, a rise just to the north, was fought over repeatedly through the autumn before German lines gave way in early November. By 1919 the Armistice had held for months and the Treaty of Versailles had been signed in June, so the ground was no longer an active front. Local residents were returning to shattered villages and clearing shell-torn fields, while American burial and graves registration crews still worked across the battlefields. For Americans who passed through, the names Esnes and Hill 304 stood for the cost of the last major campaign of the war.
