Cambrai, in northern France, spent most of the First World War under German occupation until British and Canadian troops entered in early October 1918. The town had long been known for fine linen, and its name gave English the word "cambric," but its textile trade was disrupted by the fighting and the 1917 battle that brought tanks into the surrounding fields. By 1919 many buildings near the center were ruined, and residents were returning to damaged streets to find shelter and restart work. This panoramic view shows how much of the old skyline had been broken apart, a sight that people across France would have linked to the wider cost of the war.
