Arras, in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France, was long known for its textile trade and for the medieval tapestries that gave the English word "arras" to the language. By 1919 the town lay in ruins after four years of war, with the front line running close by and the 1917 Battle of Arras fought in and around its streets. The Grand Place and the Hôtel de Ville with its belfry had been reduced to rubble, and reconstruction would take most of the following decade. Residents returning to damaged houses, along with the Allied soldiers and officials still passing through, would have known the town as a shattered frontline community where rebuilding had only just begun.
