Amiens, on the Somme River in northern France, was a city recovering from four years of war in 1919. Its position made it a front-line town: German forces came within artillery range in the spring of 1918, and the Allied offensive of August 1918 pushed the fighting back from its outskirts. Shelling had damaged streets near the river and rail lines, and the textile trades that had long made the city known for its velvet and wool cloth were disrupted by occupation and by the loss of workers to the army. The great Gothic cathedral, the city's pride, had suffered some damage but still stood over the rooftops, and residents rebuilt their homes and mills around it as they returned.
