Montfaucon and Nantillois, in the Meuse department of northeastern France, sat on German-held ground in the Argonne when the American First Army attacked there on September 26, 1918. Montfaucon, a hilltop village that gave German observers a wide view over the valley, fell to American infantry on the first day of the Meuse-Argonne offensive. Nantillois, a few miles away, was taken in the days that followed as the attack pushed through the wooded ridges. Four years of fighting and shelling had already flattened both villages, and the campaign cost the American forces well over 100,000 casualties before the armistice ended combat on November 11. For the soldiers who passed through and the French families who later returned, these names became shorthand for the bloodiest fighting of the American war.
