Seicheprey, a village in the Lorraine district of northeastern France, was the scene of one of the first serious engagements fought by American troops in 1918. On April 20, German forces raided the sector held by the 26th Division, a New England National Guard unit known as the Yankee Division, shelling the village and fighting in its streets and trenches. American forces suffered men killed, wounded, and captured, and the action showed people at home that their soldiers would face seasoned German assault troops. Before the war the surrounding countryside depended on farming and small local trades, but by 1918 nearly four years of fighting along the Toul front had left its villages badly damaged.
