Verdun, France, in 1918 was a town that had already endured two years of siege and battle. The fighting of 1916 along the Meuse River produced several hundred thousand casualties on each side, and the fortified city was largely reduced to rubble. The Voie Sacrée, the single supply road that carried men and materiel to the front, had kept the French defense alive through that grinding year. By autumn 1918, American units were moving through the region toward the Meuse-Argonne offensive that opened in late September, passing through a landscape still scarred by the earlier battle. To the French public, the name Verdun had come to stand for endurance and sacrifice.
