Lens, in the Pas-de-Calais coalfield of northern France, was a mining town in 1919 that had spent most of the Great War close to the front. German forces held it from late 1914 until the autumn of 1918, when British and Canadian troops pushed them out. The fighting left the streets, housing, and pit works badly damaged, and the mines that had long supplied coal to the region were among the first things the town had to restore. In 1919 the work was slow and uneven, with families returning to ruined neighborhoods and the coal basin's industry trying to restart. A panoramic view of the town from that year shows a place still defined by its wartime destruction and the effort to rebuild its economy.
