Belleau Wood sat near the village of Belleau and the town of Château-Thierry, northeast of Paris in the Marne valley. In the spring of 1918, the German offensive pushed to within about fifty miles of the French capital, and American units under General Pershing were rushed into the line to help hold it. In early June, Marines of the 2nd Division fought through the wood in a costly attack that lasted most of the month, leaving the ground torn by shellfire. Newspapers at home carried the Marines' names and casualty reports, and the battle became a defining American story of the war. This view shows the wood after the fighting, with splintered trunks and a battlefield being slowly cleared.
