Apremont, a village in the Meuse department of northeastern France, sat inside the German-held St. Mihiel salient in 1918, a bulge in the front that German forces had occupied since 1914. The surrounding ground was wooded hills and ravines, and months of trench fighting left the village and its woods shattered. In September 1918 the American First Army under General John J. Pershing launched the St. Mihiel offensive, the first major operation led wholly by American forces in the war, and it cleared the salient in about four days. The district had been farmland along the Meuse before the war, and its residents, many already displaced, knew it mainly as a front line.
