Philadelphia in 1929 was a city of mills, rail yards and rowhouses, and its American League club, the Athletics, was owned and managed by Connie Mack and played at Shibe Park near 21st Street and Lehigh Avenue. That season the team won 104 games and the pennant, with sluggers Jimmie Foxx and Al Simmons and pitcher Lefty Grove drawing crowds from neighborhoods across the city. In October the club beat the Chicago Cubs four games to one in the World Series, a title many Philadelphians would remember as the high point of the decade. Within weeks the stock market crashed, and the Great Depression soon shrank the factory payrolls that had filled those ballpark seats.
