Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1916 was a small college town of a few thousand residents, built around the University of Virginia on the hill just west of downtown. Its depot was a working hub where passengers, students arriving for the term, and freight from the surrounding Albemarle County farms and orchards met the trains of the Southern Railway and the Chesapeake and Ohio. Local people knew the station as the place where visitors first saw the town, and where soldiers and students alike departed. Within a few years the country's entry into the First World War would send many young men from this railway platform to the front.
