In 1915, Corning, New York, was a river town on the Chemung River whose economy rested on glass and rail. The Corning Glass Works, founded there by Amory Houghton and his partners, made lamp bulb blanks, laboratory ware, and railroad signal lenses, and the plant employed a large share of local workers. Railroads gave the town its connections to the wider state, and the New York Central station shown here served passengers and freight moving through the Southern Tier. The terminal stood at the center of daily life, where travelers, commuters, and shipments of glass and coal crossed paths. Europe was then at war, and the demand for American manufactured goods was rising, which kept the town's mills and shops busy.
