West Superior, Wisconsin, in 1902 was a busy lake port at the western tip of Lake Superior, sharing a harbor with Duluth, Minnesota, across the bay. Its waterfront depended on the Great Lakes trade, with iron ore arriving by rail from the Minnesota ranges and grain moving east from the elevators and the railroad docks. The shipyard shown here fit that economy, since lake freighters were being built and repaired for the ore and grain routes, and the steel hulls of the new era were replacing older wooden vessels. Railroad lines that ran into the twin ports tied the yards, docks, and mills to the wider country, and the workers who labored along the bay were mostly immigrant families from northern and central Europe. Residents of the time would have known the town first as a harbor where ships and trains met.
