Chicago in October 1871 was a fast-growing rail, grain, and lumber city of roughly 300,000 people, with much of its construction in wood. Beginning on the evening of October 8 and burning into October 9, a fire spread across the city's central and North Side districts, destroying about 3.3 square miles, around 17,000 buildings, and the water-works area. Several hundred people died, and tens of thousands were left homeless. Residents soon called the disaster simply "the Great Fire," and the rebuilding that followed, with brick and stone replacing timber, shaped the city's later skyline. This view records the burned ground in the months after the flames were put out.
