Decatur, Illinois sat on the Sangamon River in the summer of 1909 as a city built on grain, rail, and factories. Corn and soybean farms across Macon County supplied its elevators and mills, and the corn-processing plants that had come in the early 1900s were a growing source of jobs. Several railroad lines crossed the town, moving grain out and freight in. Residents also took pride in the town's connection to Abraham Lincoln, who had lived and practiced law there in the 1830s. The panorama's title marks it as taken before a fire that August, and the crowded brick and frame blocks it shows remind viewers how quickly a downtown like this could burn.
