Gary, Indiana, was only about eight years old in 1914. United States Steel had laid out the town in 1906 on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, and its mills began producing steel in 1908. Migrant and immigrant workers arrived in large numbers, and the population grew quickly as new housing, churches, and streetcar lines spread around the works. In a town built largely of frame houses and surrounded by blast furnaces, fire protection was a constant concern. Residents also knew Gary for its schools, where superintendent William Wirt's work-study-play program was drawing visitors from across the country. This photograph shows the firemen posed with their equipment, a reminder of how much civic organization a new industrial city had to build alongside its mills.
