Salem, Massachusetts, in 1914 was still a city of wharves, mills, and factory yards, with the Naumkeag Steam Cotton Company's textile works and the leather and shoe shops employing much of its working population. Electric streetcars carried residents from outlying neighborhoods into the center and out to Salem Willows, the shoreline picnic grounds where families spent summer afternoons. The city's older identity as a port of East India trade still shaped local pride, and the Essex Institute displayed seafaring relics and merchant family possessions. Set against these routines of work and leisure, the photograph's view of the burned district records how suddenly a single disaster could interrupt daily life.
