Chisholm, Minnesota, in 1908 was a young mining town on the Mesabi Range, founded only a few years earlier as the iron ore boom drew thousands of workers north from the Lake Superior ports and from across Europe. Its residents depended on the nearby pits and the railroads that hauled ore to the docks at Duluth and Two Harbors, and the town's population had grown faster than its buildings. A major fire had swept through the business district, and this view, taken about two months afterward, shows how much of the commercial core was still being cleared and rebuilt. Local people would have measured the town's recovery against the steady demand for ore, which kept mining crews employed while merchants and property owners raised new frame and brick storefronts.
