Baltimore after the Great Fire of February 1904 shows a downtown that had burned over a single weekend in early February. The fire started on the Sunday, and by the time it was brought under control the next day it had destroyed roughly 1,500 buildings in the commercial core, leaving the financial and merchant district a field of brick walls and ash. Cold weather had frozen hydrants and hoses, and the city called in fire companies from Washington, Philadelphia, and other cities by rail. Baltimore was a busy port and manufacturing center of about a half-million people, and residents who lived through the blaze would have measured the city's life by that gutted district, which the rebuilding of the following years would slowly fill.
