The Great Baltimore Fire of February 1904 swept through the commercial heart of the city, the blocks of wholesale houses, banks, and department stores around Hanover and Baltimore Streets, over roughly thirty hours. Fire companies from Washington, Philadelphia, and other cities came by rail to help, but a failure of water pressure left the city's hydrants nearly useless, and crews turned to dynamite to cut firebreaks. The ruins covered well over a thousand buildings, and in 1904 Baltimoreans knew the disaster as the defining event of that winter, a blow to a port city whose merchants had built their wealth on trade. The panorama records the burned district soon after the flames, a landscape that rebuilding would transform into the office and warehouse blocks of the early twentieth century.
