Baltimore burned on February 7 and 8, 1904, when a fire that began in a commercial building downtown spread through the dense business district for about thirty hours. More than 1,500 buildings were destroyed across the core of the city, and the blaze was among the largest urban fires in the United States of its time. Cold weather froze water lines and hydrants, so crews from Washington, Philadelphia, New York, and other cities came by rail to help, and dynamite was used to blast firebreaks. This panorama of the gutted blocks shows the ruined wholesale and retail streets that merchants, bankers, and dock workers had depended on, and it recorded the ground that the city would rebuild over the following years.
