In 1904 Baltimore was a port city of roughly half a million people, and its fortunes rested on the Chesapeake and the railroads that ran out of it. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, headquartered in the city, carried coal and grain west while ships loaded at the piers of Locust Point and Canton. Canning houses and garment shops near the harbor employed thousands of workers, many of them recent immigrants. Johns Hopkins University, founded in 1876, had drawn scholars from across the country, and its hospital on Broadway was a point of civic pride. Residents knew their city as a place of oyster boats, rail yards, and row houses, and the ruined blocks in this view were only one part of that larger working town.
