Baltimore, Maryland, was a busy port and rail city in 1904, and on February 7 of that year a fire that started in a downtown building spread through its central business district over the next two days. Winter cold had frozen water mains and hydrants, so crews used dynamite to blast firebreaks, while engine companies arrived by train from Washington, Philadelphia, New York and other cities. By the time the flames were checked, more than 1,500 buildings across roughly 70 blocks lay in ruins, leaving thousands of workers, clerks and merchants without jobs or premises. Baltimore Street, the commercial corridor pictured here, was among the areas the city rebuilt in the following years, with new structures replacing the older blocks that had burned.
