Engine Company No. 12 stood at 1626 North Capitol Street in Washington, D.C., and this print shows its horse-drawn apparatus in front of the firehouse. Fire companies of this era depended on teams of horses trained to race to alarms, and their harnesses were built to be hitched in seconds. The picture was taken sometime between 1880 and 1910, when horses still pulled fire engines in American cities before motorized apparatus replaced them. This print was made in the 1970s from an earlier image and belongs to the James M. Goode Collection.
