A small boy sits in the driver's seat of a horse-drawn fire wagon parked outside Webster Groves Fire Company No. 2, near St. Louis, Missouri. The record gives no firm date, but the notation "189-?" places it sometime in the 1890s, when horses still pulled pumpers and hose carts to blazes in towns across the country. Well-trained teams were known to leave their stalls at the sound of an alarm, and firehouses often became neighborhood gathering spots. The scene captures how closely a small community was tied to the horses and men who served it.
