On the night of Thursday, May 17, 1849, fire broke out among the steamboats tied up along the St. Louis levee and spread into the riverfront warehouses and commercial blocks. The blaze destroyed a large part of the city's business district and many of the steamboats that carried its trade. Currier's lithograph shows the scene in the dramatic style his New York firm used for disasters, with fire engines and crowds struggling against the flames. The fire came in the same year cholera was ravaging St. Louis, which made 1849 a hard year for the city.
