Few fires in Philadelphia drew as much attention as the one that destroyed Pennsylvania Hall on the night of May 17, 1838. The Abolition Society had built the hall as a meeting place for debate on slavery, and it had opened only days earlier in a city where antislavery views were unpopular. A mob gathered outside, and the blaze spread through the building while firefighters struggled to work their engines through the crowd. The shelflist card associates the print with a J.T. Bowen, but no date is recorded, so its origin remains unverified.
