A panoramic view of a burned city street, with a domed building rising above the wreckage, makes the scale of the damage plain: the street is lined with gutted masonry, and the dome stands as one of the few landmarks still visible through the smoke-blackened ruins. Taken in 1904, the picture belongs to a period when large urban fires were common enough that such views were often made to document the losses for the public and for insurers.
