The Thursday night of May 17, 1849, fire that this print depicts began aboard the steamboat *Malta* at the St. Louis levee and spread through the crowded riverfront warehouses and moored steamboats along the Mississippi. It went on to consume much of the downtown commercial district, destroying hundreds of buildings. New York printer Nathaniel Currier issued the view soon afterward, one of many lithographs that gave the public dramatic images of disasters at a time when news pictures were eagerly bought. The city was also still struggling with a cholera epidemic that year.
